Veterans take center stage

Maj. Kip Schlum, 944th Security Forces commander, allows students try on a helmet and vest during the annual Veteran's Day celebration Nov. 7 at Garden Lakes Elementary School in Avondale, Ariz. Eleven years ago, a teacher at the school started the celebration, held the Friday before Veteran's Day, as an effort to educate students on why they didn't have school Nov. 11.
