Col. Robert Tofil gained command of the 944th Operations Group Feb. 6, during a change of command ceremony officiated by Col. Kurt J. Gallegos, 944th Fighter Wing commander.

Tofil has filled many positions here in the span of 20 years to include, student, pilot, flight commander, assistant weapon's officer, assistant director of operations, and continues to support the wing as a group commander.

"My commitment to the 944th Operations Group is to make certain you have the tools to succeed and meet mission requirements," said Tofil.
Tofil spoke about new challenges they will meet every day.

"It's more of an evolution," he explained. "...The 944th Operations Group plays a crucial role in that work with our pilots, intel, life support and our support and admin staff. We bring in continuity, tons of experience that improves this group, [Total Force Integration] and the entire [Air Force]."

Prior to returning to Luke, he served as the 482nd Operations Support commander at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Fla. for two years.

"It's great to be back. I know [944th OG] you're a class act and have a well-deserved reputation. I look forward to working with you all again in these exciting times of evolution," said Tofil.
During the ceremony, he also thanked Col. Gregory Jones, outgoing 944th OG commander, for the legacy he will leave.

"Honez, you have clearly done an outstanding job setting this evolution on track," he added. "I'm excited for the opportunity to continue the great work you've done. I wish you and Helen good luck at your next assignment."

Before handing the reigns to Tofil, Col. Gregory Jones, outgoing 944th OG commander, had some final words.

"About two years ago, I stood up here reflecting on how our country has been in continuous combat and contingency operations since 1990. This just in, it's not going to change any time soon," said Jones. "So your mission remains clear and tangible, and it is noble... thank you for your knowledge and professionalism. It's been great working with all of you, you're a class act."

"I can't think of a better person to take command of this Operations Group, congratulations and welcome home," he added.
