In an effort to provide a deep pool of leaders for AFRC to draw on in contingency operations around the globe, the 944th Fighter Wing conducted an Ability to Survive and Operate exercise during the February UTA.

“From my perspective, I was very pleased with the way information flowed throughout the wing and the effort and sense of urgency displayed by everyone,” said Col. Derek Rydholm, 944th Fighter Wing commander.

Equally impressed was Col. Tom Harwood, 944th FW vice commander and exercise coordinator.

“I’m very pleased by the number of smart people we have in the wing who rise to meet challenges in a ‘go to war’ scenario,” he said. “Despite limited resources and communication links, wing members improvised to get the job done. Airmen across the wing took care of each other, were safe and effective in their jobs and showed much improved knowledge of ATSO procedures.”

The wing met all objectives and demonstrated the capability to move forward with flying operations, he said.

“We’ll continue to refine our ATSO capabilities and equip the wing with more and better command and control tools,” Colonel Harwood said. “(We) need to press forward in March and April to ensure we all have full chemical warfare ensembles, field gear, Airman’s Manuals and protective masks.”

The next readiness exercise is scheduled for May 6 and according to Colonel Harwood, will increase in complexity, length and intensity.

“I’m certain it will be another impressive effort by the whole team,” he said.
